Those who have worked with or traveled with President Ramos-Horta know that when he has said he would be a President for the People, it was not just politics. Well before he was President, the sight of Dr. Ramos-Horta stopping by the side of the road to give a child clothing or visiting a school to talk to the children was a familiar one. He has frequently, without fanfare, helped a widow send her child abroad for medical care, or quietly donated a $40,000 fee he received for speaking abroad to an orphanage or charity at home.
